Ellagic Acid Extract - Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ Overview:
What does ellagic acid do? What does ellagic acid do? These natural antioxidants fall into a category of antioxidants called polyphenols, which have been shown to support many positive functions of cellular activity. There is a lot of groundbreaking research regarding ellagic acid for cancer, however, the science is still too young for any conclusions and official claims to be made. What is the difference between ellagic acid and ellagitannins? This is a comon confusion. Ellagitannins are the naturally occurring plant chemicals (phytochemicals). The ellagitannins become converted into ellagic acid during the human digestive process. How does ellagitannin from other sources (such as pomegranate) compare to the Fruit Essentials product? Many studies indicate the highest concentrations of ellagitannin are found in Meeker Red Raspberries. Additional research shows the tiny seeds of these berries contain even higher concentrations. It is important to understand that ellagitannin's bioavailability (the ability to be absorbed and utilized by the body) is absolutely critical. The USDA Agricultural Research Services website also backs this argument with their quote: "In pure form, ellagic acid is highly insoluble and biologically unavailable...ellagic acid, as it is biosynthesized in plants, occurs in combination with glucose as ellagitannins. These compounds are quite water soluble and biologically available." This means that relatively small amounts of ellagitannins may be more effective in the human diet than large doses of ellagic acid. Many pomegranate and other sources of ellagitannin are isolated, synthesized, or over processed which makes them less bioavailable than proven meeker red raspberry seed extracts used in the Fruit Essentials® product. Can't we just eat a lot of the raspberries and seeds? Sure, but remember seeds are naturally designed to pass through your mammalian body to spread the plant species. In order for your body to use the nutrients within, they must be "unlocked" from the seed's protective hull. We manufacture our product using a proprietary cold-press method, which preserves the bioavailability and concentration of ellagic acid and other phenolics from red raspberries. By maintaining low heat, we protect these extremely sensitive nutrients. Do you have a question that isn't addressed on this page? Please feel free to contact us.
